Grabbing coal from the coal burner doesnt reveal the mortar recipe you have to drop it and pick it back up.
This bug is related to Coal metal, & Hazium and it does the same thing with metal bars. Game doesnt recognize it in your inventory until you drop it and pick it up. You also cannot craft with it until youve dropped and picked it up again.
